Well that was a short lived bit of excitement.  We were asked by the County to jump through hoops to notify everyone about the scheduled burn.  We did.  It didn't happen.  First it was too dry, now it's too wet.  Two burns were put off.  One burn took place, ours is now put off indefinitely!!!!! Once again Vero Lake Estates is disregarded.  Contact your County Commissioners if you too are becoming impatient with the political treadmill we have been on. The children and families of VLE have waited long enough for improvements to our Park.

***Newsflash***

After 18 months of effort to see the dream of a VLE Park become a reality, we are finally moving on to the next phase.   During the week of July 21st  we will have a controlled burn at the Park.  This is the beginning of creating not only a lush wildlife habitat, but also a child life habitat.

The following are excerpts and information from an email from Beth Powell, Conservation Lands manager, IRC.

Anyone who is smoke sensitive should plan to spend the day either inside with the air conditioning on or plan a day out, in another area.  Because we have had so much rain, the pine needles and leaves on the ground are very wet and will cause a lot of smoke.  Moms and Dads, talk to your children about the importance of staying out of the area until further notice as there will be prep work before and clean up after the burn.

Beth Powell, Conservation Lands Manager, will be on site and can even do a talk with the kids the day before the burn if people want to have a pre-burn meeting.  "Division of Forestry will be knocking down the snags within the next few days or early next week before the burn and doing some other prep burn work - everyone should stay out of the area completely until otherwise notified.  Mop-up will be done on Thursday the 17th. Mop-up is another way of saying that they will be putting the fire out and covering up smoking snags, etc. and just making sure that any embers are completely put out."

“We have a great opportunity to educate the VLE area about the importance of making sure their homes are safe from fire – we have rain now, but we all know that it doesn’t take much to dry out quickly.  VLE is in a pine flat woods type area that has a lot of vacant lots that may be overgrown – it’s important that homeowners maintain a buffer around their homes that protect them from fire.  That isn’t to say that they can’t have shade or pine trees, but there are some things that they should do, like make sure that pine needles and leaves don’t accumulate on their roof, etc.  So, if we have an opportunity to increase folks knowledge base I think it’s great – If you want me to come out and give a talk, just let me know – my schedule is very flexible right now!!!”

"Also, we had thousands of plants donated from a local nursery - so as soon as the fire is over and you guys schedule a work  day, we can begin planting some live oaks and other plants that would be suitable in that area.  I told you that we've had more than rains from the heavens lately."

So there you have it!!  VLEPO has been working hard for you.   If you are not a member you should show your support and become one, or renew you old membership so we can continue our efforts. A lot is going to happen at your Park over the next several months.  Let’s wrap around this and make it a true community project that we can all be proud of for years to come.

Sincerely,

Susan,
President, VLEPO

Janet Wood,
Chairwoman, Park Committee

Well here you are!!!  Your VLE Environmental Park Conceptual Plans.  It took a lot of energy to get this far.  Our park has been a work in progress for some time.  One part of the process required a presentation before the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee in May 2007.  Following is a portion of the text that was submitted to that Committee.  We did receive unanimous support for our Park; however we have so far received no funding from the County to proceed.  If you want to see your Park become a reality, email or call your County Commissioners and County Administrator. wdavis@ircgov.com   flescher@ircgov.com  gwheeler@ircgov.com   pobryan@ircgov.com  sbowden@ircgov.com   jbaird@ircgov.com

You can call the Commissioners at 226.1490 or the County Administrator at 226.1408.

It's not just a destination, it's a part of the journey, and half the fun is getting there!!

See you at the Park!

VLE Environmental Park Conceptual Plans

Vero Lake Estates (hereinafter referred to as "VLE") is a Subdivision in North Indian River County East of I 95 and South of CR 512. In the last three years VLE has experienced rapid growth. We now have approximately 2,400 homes and 1,000 school age children.

The majorities of our children are in Middle and Elementary School and therefore cannot drive to the North County Regional Park, which is approximately 3.7 miles from the SW corner of VLE. The North County Regional Park is located on the north side of CR 512 and there is no safe way for children to cross over to the park. Currently CR 512 is under construction and when completed will be a minimum of four lanes with no safe cross over provided for our children. The result is we have almost 1,000 children with no place to go for outdoor/fitness activities.

As President of Vero Lake Estates Property Owners, Inc. (hereinafter referred to as "VLEPO") I, Susan A. Thomasson, have resided in VLE for just over four years. I have been involved with VLEPO for the same amount of time as a member, Board Member, Vice President and currently President. I have also been a member of the Florida Green Building Coalition, Inc. (hereinafter referred to as FGBC) for three years.

Taking into consideration all of the above information, I had a vision for VLE. I wanted to see a certified "Green" park for the residents of VLE and Indian River County become a reality. I wanted children to see that man and nature can co-exist in a park without negatively impacting the environment. We can be good Stewards of the land and enjoy it at the same time. I wanted Indian River County to embrace this concept as well and realize the minimal maintenance requirements. VLE Environmental Park can be an example for all of Indian River County residents to enjoy.

I recently received permission from Jim Davis, P.E., Public Works Director, to use a parcel of land that was set-aside as a Park Area for VLE in the 1950's. The parcel information is included.

Nature/fitness trails would provide educational opportunities. With the help of the Environmental Learning Center and others we will label vegetation and identify animals that inhabit the site. Xeriscape landscaping would require no irrigation. Eagle Scouts, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, youth organizations and schools would be able to use the park for their projects. Butterfly gardens could be planted that would be watered by rain barrels.

Currently there are no criteria provided by FGBC for certified "Green" parks. I have been asked to head a committee to research that issue. The VLE Environmental Park would be not only the first certified "Green" park for Indian River County but also could quite possibly be the first certified "Green" park for the State of Florida. We would pioneer the way for other counties and cities in setting the "Green Standard".

I am respectfully asking for your support to go forward with this project.

Susan A. Thomasson, President
VLEPO
