Hello VLE Residents,

You will have an opportunity to hear from and speak with Candidates for County Commissioner for Districts 3 & 5 at our next meeting Monday, August 4, 2008.  The questions they will be asked are listed below under the Agenda.  Don’t miss this opportunity to find out how candidates will vote on issues important to Vero Lake Estates and Indian River County.

The political process is our opportunity to determine our fate as to who governs us, and we should take it very seriously.  In 2006 races for County Commissioner were won by margins of 708 and 1,134.  We currently have 2,732 registered in our Precinct.  Your vote does make a difference!!!!!

In order to be able to vote in the Primary election on August 26, 2008 you have to be registered to vote by July 28, 2008.  In order to vote in the General Election on November 4, 2008 you have to be registered to vote by October 6, 2008.  We will have registration forms available at the meeting. Our numbers are up 20% over 2006 so keep it up.  Your voice, your choice!!

VLEPO Meeting Agenda for August 4, 2008

7:00 Call to Order.  Ray Kendzierski will lead the Invocation and proceed with the Pledge of Allegiance.

Welcome members, guests and Candidates for County Commissioner, Districts 3 & 5.

As this is a Special Meeting there will be no business conducted.

The Political Forum will be conducted as follows:

Candidates will be given three minutes for a synopsis of their platform.  Following will be six questions and each candidate will have two minutes to respond to each question. When the question has been answered, other Candidates will have an opportunity for a 60 second rebuttal followed by the option of a 60 second response. When this portion of the forum is complete, there will be a 3-minute wrap up time for each Candidate.

The six questions are as follows:

1. If elected, would you be willing to put the issue of charter government on the ballot for the public to vote on?

2.  The Vero Lake Estates vicinity, which includes three county schools with hundreds of children, numerous businesses, and over twenty miles of emergency evacuation routes, is severely lacking readily available Fire/EMT protection. It is normal for fire units to take 10 to 15 minutes to arrive on the scene to fire emergencies. We have requested that IRC Emergency Services either repair the VLVFD fire station, and recruit and train new volunteer firefighters, or have a new paid Fire/EMT station built to cover this area.  Would you vote to allocate a fraction of the 28 million dollar EMS budget to provide more readily available fire protection for this community?

3. Vero Lake Estates has an infrastructure problem that was created 50 years ago.  The residents of Vero Lake Estates voluntarily agreed to tax themselves to help fund the cost of roads and yet almost a quarter of a century later we have only 5 paved roads. Why have road impact fees collected from the explosion of growth in Vero Lake Estates not been used to pave additional roads and would you support using impact fees or some other source to pay for additional paved roads?

4.  Water mains are being installed in Vero Lake Estates to provide better fire protection. Would you vote yes to ensure that when all phases of the water main project are complete, that all residents of Vero Lake Estates will be within 1,000 feet of a fire hydrant?

5. Would you support balanced economic growth and bringing clean industry into Indian River County that provides jobs at all income levels?

6.  After 18 months of effort the children and families of Vero Lake Estates are still waiting for improvements to the VLE Environmental Park.  Would you support the efforts of this project to move forward in a timely manner and allocate impact fee money set aside for parks and recreation or some other source for the funding?

This completes the formal portion of the forum and 7 questions will be taken from the general membership directed to a specific candidate with a two-minute response time. Questions will be limited to issues that have not been previously addressed or a rebuttal.

At this time the meeting will be adjourned and you will have the opportunity to speak with candidates one on one for as long as you choose to stay.

Available at the meeting: Sign up sheets for Committees.  Membership Applications and cards.  Voter registration cards. Local business literature. Free Recycling Bins.

All Candidates for County Commissioner, District 3 & 5 have accepted our invitation to this important Political Forum.  I hope to see you all there.

Sincerely,

Susan

President, VLEPO
